Basic refractory materials refer to refractory materials that readily undergo chemical reactions at high temperatures with acidic refractory materials, acidic slags, acidic fluxes, or alumina. Typically, they constitute a class of refractory materials in which magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, or a magnesium oxide–calcium oxide combination serves as the primary crystalline phase. Broadly speaking, basic refractory materials encompass magnesia refractories, spinel refractories, magnesia-lime refractories, forsterite refractories, and calcium oxide refractories, among others.

Basic refractory materials exhibit excellent high-temperature stability, enabling them to withstand prolonged use at elevated temperatures without easily deforming, cracking, or spalling. They possess superior corrosion resistance, alongside robust abrasion resistance, compressive strength, and impact resistance. In high-temperature industrial sectors—such as steel, cement, and glass manufacturing—basic refractory materials serve as the core lining components for kilns and furnaces, distinguished by their exceptional resistance to slag erosion and their mechanical stability at high temperatures.
